Maybe you locked yourself out of the house one too many times. Maybe you simply want to make sure that you never find yourself stuck outside in the cold without a way to get back in. Either way, you will want to take a few moments to review the following ideas for where you can hide a spare key in your yard.

In The Bird Feeder

It is important to make sure that you are hiding your spare house key in a place that you will remember, but that is unlikely to be searched by a criminal. Inside of the bird feeder can be a great spot, as long as you are keeping the key properly covered. Take your single house key and seal it inside of a mini snack plastic bag that seals shut. This will protect the key from getting damaged by any moisture that might make its way into the bird feeder. Empty the feed out of the container and tape your key to the bottom of it. You can then pour the bird feed back in so that the key is perfectly covered. Just make sure that you are keeping an eye on the level of feed so that you can continue to add more as needed so that the key is never exposed.

In A Flower Pot

Taping the key to the bottom of a flower pot is no longer good enough as someone might notice it. Instead, you will want to place your single spare house key inside of an empty prescription medication bottle and then close the lid tight. This will protect the key from rusting when it rains or you water your plant. Simply dig a hole in the soil in your flower pot so that you have a spot that is deep and wide enough to fit the bottle. Make sure that you will have plenty of soil to cover the top of the bottle so that a hard rain will not be able to wash away the soil to the point that the top of the bottle is exposed. To help you remember the exact location of the key, you can place a plant card, small stone, or decoration can be placed over the top of it. This way, you will not have to dig through the entire flower pot when you need to retrieve the key.

With those two unique hiding places in mind, you should have no trouble placing your spare house key in a spot that is safe from criminals, but where it is easily retrievable by you when you need it. It's also a good idea to have the number of a locksmith on hand in case you can't find your spare.
